According to director Jon M. Chu, the upcoming Wicked sequel, Wicked: For Good, will provide a deeper exploration of the lead characters' journeys. In an exclusive interview, the 45-year-old director expressed his hope that when fans watch the 2024 film, they will "get the joy and love of movie one, but there's extra meat on this one."
Chu is particularly excited for audiences to witness the performances of Cynthia Erivo, 38, who plays Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West), and Ariana Grande, 32, who portrays Glinda (the Good Witch of the North). The director believes the film will allow these actors to truly "come to life" as they depict their characters' "adult selves" and the "shattered dreams" they now face.
Chu teased that the sequel will offer "a few surprises" that fans are not currently anticipating. He emphasized that the two Wicked films should be viewed as a complete story, rather than just the first movie and its follow-up.
The Wicked movies continue the prequel story to The Wizard of Oz, based on the long-running Broadway musical of the same name. The films will feature fan-favorite songs like "For Good," "As Long as You're Mine," and "No Good Deed," as well as two new original numbers.
