A remarkable new "concert experience" is set to debut in 2027, bringing the beloved musical Wicked to audiences through live-to-film concerts. Wicked: Part One In Concert will premiere at Radio City Music Hall on January 23, 2027, after a special preview in San Francisco on January 16. This collaboration between Universal Film and Universal Destinations & Experiences promises an immersive event.
The unique format involves projecting the films onto an HD screen while a symphony orchestra performs Stephen Schwartz's celebrated songs and John Powell's underscore live. This innovative presentation is a partnership with Hurwitz Concerts, founded by Oscar-winner Justin Hurwitz.
Stephen Schwartz expressed his delight, stating, "I've always found it an amazing experience" to witness live film score concerts and is thrilled for Wicked's movies to be presented this way. Hurwitz echoed this enthusiasm, calling the films "so perfect" for the live-to-film format and honoring the chance to bring Schwartz's musical and Powell's score to global concert venues.
Directed by Jon M. Chu, the Wicked films star Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda. The concerts are scheduled to tour beyond New York, with announced dates including Chicago, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Toronto, Montréal, and Vancouver, with more cities to be revealed.
