- Vijay later adopted and popularized the 'Thalapathy' title.

Actor Saravanan has revealed he used the title 'Ilaya Thalapathy' prior to its association with Vijay. He stated that veteran DMK leader Veerapandi S. Arumugam bestowed the title upon him in the 1990s during a gathering in Salem. Saravanan's name appeared with this prefix in films such as 'Nallathe Nadakkum' and 'Sundaram Plus 2'.
Vijay's introduction to the 'Ilaya Thalapathy' title occurred in the 1992 film 'Rasigan,' directed by his father, S. A. Chandrasekhar. As Vijay's stardom grew, the prefix 'Ilaya' was dropped, leading to the singular, powerful moniker 'Thalapathy', prominently featured in later films like 'Mersal'.
Saravanan gradually ceased using the title as Vijay's connection to it solidified. Reports suggest a conversation with S. A. Chandrasekhar, where Saravanan was told he could keep the title if he remained a lead actor. Saravanan eventually moved on, facilitating the title's strong identification with Vijay. Saravanan, born in 1966, later gained recognition for his role in 'Paruthiveeran' and continues to act in supporting roles, also directing the film 'Thaayumaanavan'.
