Robert Eggers' new gothic folk horror film, Werwulf, is set to debut in theaters on Christmas Day. The film's score is a collaborative effort between composer Robin Carolan and singer-songwriter Ethel Cain. Werwulf puts a fresh spin on the classic werewolf legend, focusing on a 14th-century English town terrorized by a beast.
Carolan described the songwriting process with Cain as remarkably seamless, involving the exchange of medieval music and ambient sounds. Initially intended for textural vocals, their collaboration evolved into a full song titled "Wynter Waxeth." Cain's performance, delivered in Middle English, was noted for its earthy and feral beauty, with her pronunciation mastered efficiently.
The soundtrack will be available digitally on December 18, with a vinyl release following on January 29. Carolan is a frequent collaborator of Eggers, having previously scored his films The Northman and Nosferatu. Cain's most recent album, Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You, was released in 2025.
