Werner Herzog's documentary "Ghost Elephants" has secured home entertainment rights with Buffalo 8 Distribution following a deal negotiated at the Toronto Film Festival market. This partnership will oversee the film's home entertainment rollout.
The documentary follows conservation biologist Dr. Steve Boyes and National Geographic Explorers on an extensive, decade-long search for an elusive elephant population in Angola. Accompanied by KhoiSan trackers, the expedition merges scientific investigation with traditional knowledge.
Herzog, who also wrote, directed, and narrated the film, characterizes the expedition as an exploration of dreams and imagination against the backdrop of reality. "Ghost Elephants" premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2025 and has since garnered accolades, including a special mention at Venice and the Programmers Award for Documentary Feature at the Virginia Film Festival.
The film, produced by Herzog and Ariel Leon Isacovitch, is a collaboration involving National Geographic Documentary Films, Sobey Road Entertainment, Skellig Rock, Inc., and The Roots Production Service. Herzog's narration also received an Emmy nomination in 2026 for outstanding narrator.
