A Grade I listed Tudor castle is receiving a substantial £3 million in government funding to address critical roof repairs. Walmer Castle in Kent has been experiencing severe leaks, described as occurring in "numerous places," necessitating urgent intervention. English Heritage, the charity responsible for the property, had aimed to raise over £5.5 million to tackle the extensive work required on the historic structure.
Built in 1539 by Henry VIII as part of a coastal defence network, Walmer Castle holds significant historical importance. It currently serves as the official residence for the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, a ceremonial role once held by prominent figures like Sir Winston Churchill. The extensive modifications over centuries, combined with recent weather, have taken a toll on its condition.
Assessments in December 2023 revealed the extent of the damage, leading to a temporary closure. "Keeping the rain out of Walmer Castle was a major challenge, and has been for decades," stated Neil McCollum of English Heritage. The charity emphasized that a major roof replacement is now the only viable option to prevent irreversible damage to this heritage site.
