The 55th International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) is showcasing "The World Came Flooding In," an innovative virtual reality documentary. Created by Australian artists Isobel Knowles and Van Sowerwine, this immersive installation offers a profound exploration of flood experiences.
The VR documentary transports viewers into the virtual homes of three survivors, allowing them to navigate recreated spaces and hear personal accounts. It delves into the emotional impact of losing a home to flooding, emphasizing themes of community and resilience. The experience is designed to build empathy and highlight the human dimension of natural disasters.
Following the VR journey, an extended reality installation provides further engagement. Miniature sets of the flooded homes, accompanied by QR codes, offer additional audio commentary and holographic elements. This extends the narrative, allowing for deeper reflection on the shared experiences of flood survivors and the enduring power of memory.
