Literary View Destroyed by New Apartments
20 Jan
Summary
- Development blocks sea view from Virginia Woolf's former home.
- The view inspired Woolf's novel 'To the Lighthouse'.
- Locals condemn the building as 'cultural vandalism'.

Residents and lovers of Virginia Woolf's work are expressing outrage over a new development in St Ives, Cornwall. Permission was granted in 2009 for a five-storey building comprising 12 apartments directly in front of Talland House, Woolf's former holiday residence.
Construction commenced last week on the project, which will obstruct the significant sea view across St Ives Bay towards Godrevy lighthouse. This vista was a profound source of inspiration for Woolf, notably for her seminal novel, 'To the Lighthouse.'
Local author Patrick Gale has vehemently criticized the scheme, labeling it 'preposterous cultural vandalism.' Despite proposed amendments, Windingbrook Developments maintains that the scale of the construction remains largely consistent with the original approved plans.
