Zampella co-founded Infinity Ward in 2002, which launched Call of Duty in 2003. This game spawned a franchise that has sold an astounding 500 million copies. He later departed Activision with co-founder Jason West to establish Respawn Entertainment under Electronic Arts in 2010.
While Electronic Arts did not disclose the cause of death, reports suggest Zampella died in a weekend car crash in Southern California.
