Video game luminary Vince Zampella, a pivotal figure in the creation of the immensely popular Call of Duty franchise, has passed away at the age of 55. Electronic Arts, the parent company of Zampella's Respawn Entertainment, confirmed his death, noting his profound and far-reaching influence on the industry.
Zampella co-founded Infinity Ward in 2002, which launched Call of Duty in 2003. This game spawned a franchise that has sold an astounding 500 million copies. He later departed Activision with co-founder Jason West to establish Respawn Entertainment under Electronic Arts in 2010.
While Electronic Arts did not disclose the cause of death, reports suggest Zampella died in a weekend car crash in Southern California. Authorities are investigating the incident, which involved a single vehicle veering off the road on Angeles Crest Highway, resulting in fatalities for both occupants.
