Vince Clarke, a pioneering figure in electronic music from bands like Depeche Mode, Yazoo, and Erasure, has embarked on a new musical venture. He has joined forces with Neil Arthur of Blancmange and British electronic producer Benge to form the project Doublespeak. This collaboration has resulted in a self-titled album, slated for release on May 29 via London Records.
The album showcases Doublespeak's unique approach to cover songs, featuring analog synthesizer renditions of tracks originally performed by diverse artists including ABBA, the Carpenters, Young Marble Giants, and the Magnetic Fields. Clarke shared that approaching these familiar songs felt akin to discovering brilliant new material, a sentiment that fueled their creative process.
This new project adds to Clarke's extensive discography, which includes recent work with Erasure and his solo LP, Songs of Silence. The track "Back to Nature," originally by Fad Gadget, is highlighted as an early preview of Doublespeak's distinctive sound.
