County Down is currently hosting the Magnus Viking Association's annual Summertime Festival, marking its fourth year. This event offers a living history experience, demonstrating the realities of medieval life. The association aims to educate the public about a different time, emphasizing the importance of family, communication, and storytelling.
The Ballydugan Medieval Settlement, constructed by the association during the Covid pandemic, serves as a permanent base for historical reenactments. It is also integrated into the Key Stage 2 curriculum for local schools. Visitors can engage in workshops such as jewellery making and witness authentic blacksmith forging demonstrations.
Activities at the festival include axe throwing, battle re-enactments, and exploring the armoury. Participants are encouraged to roleplay and experience Viking combat scenarios. The event also features a special guest appearance by Dave the Raven, known from the Apple TV series Vikings. The association plans to sail longboats on Strangford Lough later this summer.
