Vijay's Final Film Delayed Amidst Censor Woes

The highly anticipated film Jana Nayagan, marking actor-politician Vijay's final on-screen appearance, has been indefinitely postponed from its scheduled January 9 release. Producers KVN Productions announced the delay on January 8, citing unavoidable circumstances following issues with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
The film was submitted for certification on December 18, leading to multiple recommended cuts. After resubmission on December 22, the producers were informed of a U/A 16+ certificate recommendation. However, official certification was delayed, prompting the producers to file a petition in the Madras High Court on January 6. They argued that the delay could lead to losses of nearly Rs 500 crore due to pre-sold tickets and high audience anticipation.
The CBFC cited a complaint alleging hurt to minority sentiments and concerns over the depiction of defence force emblems as reasons for referring the film to a revising committee. The Madras High Court reserved its order, expected on January 9. Regardless of the outcome, the film cannot release as planned, with refunds now being issued to distributors. Overseas advance bookings alone had reportedly earned nearly Rs 32 crore.
