16 Mar
Summary
- A new Institute for the Moving Image launches in 2026.
- It aims to provide year-round filmmaker development beyond the festival.
- Initial programs focus on animation, documentary, and creative business.

The Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) has announced a significant expansion of its artist development programs with the establishment of the Institute for the Moving Image. Set to launch in 2026, this new initiative will transform VIFF's existing festival-intensive programs into a comprehensive, year-round model for creative growth and professional training.
The Institute aims to address a critical need within British Columbia's film landscape, providing emerging and established filmmakers, especially those facing systemic barriers, with sustained mentorship and industry access. This expansion moves beyond the annual festival to offer continuous support for filmmakers.
Focusing on both the quality of work and leveraging VIFF's international connections, the Institute will provide a global platform for Canadian talent. Executive Director Kyle Fostner emphasized the responsibility VIFF feels to be a key partner in the success of Canadian filmmakers.
Led by Ana Belén Asfura, the Institute will prioritize equity-deserving filmmakers across Canada. Its inaugural programs, with applications currently open until April 19, will include cohorts in animation, documentary, and creative business. Future plans involve expanding into more training streams and potential artist residencies.
The Canada Media Fund is supporting the Institute and its initial 2026 pilot programs. VIFF envisions the Institute becoming a crucial resource for Canadian cinema, fostering sustainable careers and strengthening the independent film ecosystem by connecting creators with a worldwide network.
