Vietnamese cinema is achieving global reach with the film "Fish, Fists and Ambergris." This production by 89s Group, initially titled "Long Diên Hương," garnered significant attention after earning approximately $8 million at the Vietnamese box office, with over 2.5 million tickets sold.
The narrative follows two impoverished brothers who find a valuable chunk of ambergris. Their attempt to profit from this "floating gold" quickly escalates into a perilous chase involving smugglers and rivals. They are joined by an eclectic group, including a clever fish vendor and a volatile local.
The film debuted theatrically in North America on January 30th, 2026, with Cambodia to follow on April 17th, 2026. A key distribution deal will bring the film to Netflix across 11 Southeast Asian territories on March 5th, 2026.
Producer Mai Bảo Ngọc emphasized the film's aim to capture Vietnam's coastal spirit and explore universal themes of human connection and survival. Producer Võ Thanh Hoà highlighted the project as a bold step for Vietnamese cinema, embodying the philosophy of "Local Story, Global Telling."
