Spanish actor Catalina Sopelana will lead the dramedy 'Video Store 2001,' a project now co-produced by Sideral Cinema. The film centers on Mila, a young woman fighting to preserve her inherited video store against the threat of a nearby Blockbuster. This setting reflects a period of significant change in viewing habits and cinema culture.
The story unfolds in the early 2000s, portraying the video store as a sanctuary for a community of outsiders. Mila must navigate themes of loss, change, and her own fears. Antonia San Juan also joins the cast in a supporting role, with additional casting in progress.
Guillermo Polo directs 'Video Store 2001,' expanding on his Feroz Award-winning short film. He describes the film as a character-driven narrative about confronting legacy, blending dark humor with emotional realism. The film aims to resonate universally and serves as a tribute to cinema.
Set for production around late 2026 or early 2027, the project has secured selective funding from the Spanish Film Institute (ICAA). It also benefits from development support from Málaga's MAFF, Gijón Film Festival's Semilleru, and Valencia's ProMercat.
