Tamil Cinema Loses a Legend: Bharathiraja Dies at 84

Veteran Tamil film director, producer, and screenwriter Bharathiraja passed away at the age of 84 due to age-related complications. He died at his residence in Chennai on Wednesday. Bharathiraja was widely recognized as a trendsetter in Tamil cinema, known for his unique storytelling and direction. His career was marked by numerous national awards, predominantly for films with rural settings. He first gained significant recognition with his debut film '16 Vayathinile' in 1977. This critically acclaimed movie starred Kamal Haasan and Sridevi in lead roles, with Rajinikanth playing a pivotal antagonist. The film was a major box office success and remains a landmark in Tamil cinema history. Bharathiraja was fondly known by the title 'Iyakkunar Imayam', meaning 'peak of directors'. He also had a distinct pattern of casting female leads whose names began with the letter 'R'. A recipient of the Padmashri award, Bharathiraja also ventured into acting in his later years, appearing in films like 'Thiruchitrambalam'. His son, actor Manoj, had passed away earlier.
