Veteran Stars Lead New Opera Drama

Hong Kong screen veterans Law Kar-ying and Paw Hee-ching are set to star in "The Grand Tribute," a new Cantonese opera drama written and directed by Sri Kishore. This film marks a departure from Kishore's previous work, focusing instead on traditional Cantonese performing arts.

The narrative centers on a Cantonese opera performer in his 70s who plans one final performance as a loving farewell to his wife, who is terminally ill. Law Kar-ying, an accomplished opera performer himself, will act alongside Paw Hee-ching, grounding the central relationship with authentic experience.

Director Sri Kishore expressed his fascination with the enduring love of elderly couples and their unique expressions of affection. He aims to capture this essence within the Cantonese opera setting, incorporating humor and warmth.

Kishore views Cantonese opera not as a relic but as a dynamic art form that bridges generational divides. The film intends to explore intergenerational bonds, cultural appreciation, and the creation of art as an act of love, themes he believes are universal.

Principal photography for "The Grand Tribute" is scheduled to commence in October. The production aims for a wide theatrical release, supplemented by international streaming distribution, with the goal of sharing Hong Kong's rich artistic heritage with viewers worldwide.
