19 May
Summary
- Wang playfully dissed Anna Wintour's signature sunglasses at a recent gala.
- Wintour cites tiredness and privacy as reasons for her constant eyewear.
- Wang views sunglasses as a fun, creative, and transformative accessory.

At the 2026 Figure Skating in Harlem Igniting the Dream Gala held on May 18, designer Vera Wang playfully poked fun at Anna Wintour's iconic style, particularly her signature sunglasses. Wang, while posing for photographers, removed her own sunglasses and quipped, "I do both, I'm not Anna Wintour." This remark highlighted Wintour's well-known habit of wearing sunglasses for most occasions.
Wintour, the former editor-in-chief of Vogue, has shared her reasoning for this choice in previous interviews. She told CNN in 2019 that sunglasses are "incredibly useful" for concealing her thoughts and are helpful when she feels tired or sleepy, acknowledging they have become part of her identity. Speaking to the BBC in 2024, she further described them as a constant "prop" that helps her both see and not see, and be seen yet not be seen.
Despite Wang's jest, Wintour has made notable public appearances, including at the Met Gala, without her usual eyewear. For instance, she attended the 2022 Met Gala in a vibrant outfit, accessorized with a tiara instead of sunglasses. Meanwhile, Wang, who has launched her own eyewear collection and considers herself an "collector" of frames, embraces sunglasses as a means of creative self-expression. She told 20/20 Magazine in March 2021 that eyewear is an "insane accessory" that allows for personal transformation and experimentation, akin to a new hairstyle or makeup.
