The 83rd Venice International Film Festival's Immersive section is set to captivate audiences with its 10th anniversary celebration of innovative Extended Reality (XR) art. This year's lineup boasts significant contributions from Hollywood A-listers, including Margot Robbie, Mark Ruffalo, Daisy Ridley, and Omar Sy, alongside esteemed figures like Kathleen Turner, Isabelle Huppert, Andy Serkis, and composer A. R. Rahman.
Festival highlights include Andy Serkis's "Nevatars," voiced by Ridley and Turner, and "Galapagos: The Last Eden," directed by Anthony Geffen and voiced by Robbie. These two projects are notable for being experienced on advanced, previously unseen smart glass devices, marking a substantial leap in immersive storytelling possibilities.
Other compelling works include Abderrahmane Sissako's "Artou" voiced by Sy, Ruffalo's contribution to the climate refugee documentary "Solwata," Huppert's voice work in "Outrenoir," and A. R. Rahman's "Anokhya: The Origin." The festival also features "Bowie: Unseen Unheard," an audiovisual experience utilizing spatial sound technology, and works from VR pioneers Celine Daemen and Nonny de la Peña.
This year's Immersive section also addresses pressing social issues, with projects like "Raj'in" (We Shall Return) documenting the situation in the West Bank, "Spomyny" chronicling life during the invasion of Ukraine, and "36,000 Ways" constructed from shrapnel collected on the Ukrainian frontline.
