Delhi Court Protects Varun Dhawan's Image

Bollywood actor Varun Dhawan has initiated legal proceedings in the Delhi High Court to protect his personality rights. He is seeking to prevent unknown entities from using his images and personal characteristics to create AI-generated content or for commercial exploitation, such as merchandise, without his authorization.

The Delhi High Court indicated on Friday that it would issue an interim order to safeguard Dhawan's personality and publicity rights. Any unauthorized use of the actor's material, including pornographic content, deepfakes, or merchandise, will be subject to a takedown order. The court has requested a detailed filing of links related to infringing content.

Dhawan's legal action is part of a broader movement where numerous public figures are seeking similar protections. Celebrities like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Karan Johar, Kumar Sanu, Asha Bhosle, Salman Khan, and others have previously petitioned the Delhi High Court.

The court has increasingly recognized the exclusive right of personalities to control the commercial use of their image and persona. It has taken serious note of AI-driven impersonations and deepfakes, emphasizing their potential to damage reputation and dignity. However, the court also stressed the importance of protecting legitimate artistic expression, satire, and news reporting.
