Vincent van Gogh, born on March 30, 1853, is a defining figure in Western art, despite achieving little fame during his 37 years. His brother, Theo van Gogh, a vital supporter, exchanged letters and funded Vincent's artistic endeavors. Theo married Johanna Bonger in 1889 and passed away in 1890, six months after his brother.
Johanna van Gogh-Bonger played a pivotal role, publishing their correspondence and championing Vincent's art. She ensured his work reached global attention, laying the groundwork for future generations. Her son, Vincent Willem van Gogh, inherited a vast collection of paintings, drawings, and letters, further dedicating himself to their preservation.
In 1962, Vincent Willem established the Vincent van Gogh Foundation, which evolved into the renowned Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, opening in 1973. This institution houses the most extensive display of van Gogh's art. Currently, Willem van Gogh, Theo's grandson, serves as the museum's chief ambassador, actively involving his own family in maintaining the legacy.
