Summary
- Film is a dark comedy with superhero and alter-ego elements.
- Karthi plays a corrupt cop inspired by MGR's ideals.
- Second half loses narrative steam, climax feels rushed.

Director Nalan Kumarasamy returns with "Vaa Vaathiyaar," a film starring Karthi that explores a unique premise. Karthi portrays Ramu, a police officer born at the same time as the legendary MGR, whose life is shaped by his grandfather's MGR fandom and his own admiration for villainous characters. This sets the stage for a narrative that cleverly weaves in elements of dark comedy, superhero action, and psychological drama as Ramu transforms.
The first half of "Vaa Vaathiyaar" excels with its intriguing concept and Karthi's charismatic performance, especially as he emulates MGR's mannerisms. The introduction of quirky characters like Sathyaraj's businessman Periyasamy and Krithi Shetty's Wu adds depth, though Wu's character feels underutilized. Santhosh Narayanan's music provides a pleasant, experimental touch, though it occasionally disrupts the film's pacing.
However, the film's momentum wanes in the second half, with the promising alter-ego concept remaining superficial. The narrative settles into a predictable rhythm, failing to explore the full psychological potential of Ramu's transformation. The climax concludes abruptly, leaving a sense of unfulfilled promise despite the film's ambitious setup and Karthi's strong portrayal.
