United Talent Agency (UTA) has signed Colombian filmmaker Simón Mesa Soto, known for his frequent appearances at the Cannes Film Festival. Soto's latest work, "Un Poeta," premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2025 festival and was awarded the Jury Prize. This film, a blend of satire and tragicomedy, follows a poet navigating artistic ambitions and personal complexities.
"Un Poeta" has since screened at various international festivals, securing accolades at Melbourne, San Sebastián, El Gouna, and Munich. It was selected as Colombia's submission for the 98th Academy Awards and received nominations for Best International Film at the Film Independent Spirit Awards and Best Ibero-American Film at the Goya Awards.
Soto's connection with Cannes dates back to 2014 when his short film "Leidi" won the short film Palme d'Or. He returned to the festival's shorts competition in 2016 with "Madre." His debut feature, "Amparo," premiered at Cannes Critics' Week in 2021, earning the Louis Roederer Foundation Rising Star Award. Soto studied Audiovisual Communication at Universidad de Antioquia and holds a Master's degree from the London Film School.
