- Demand surged after the 2026 Magh Mela, with orders from across Uttar Pradesh.
- Inmates' artwork fosters personality change and motivation for release.

In a unique initiative, inmates from Kaushambi district jail have successfully created and sold Tulsi malas made from Shyama tulsi cultivated on nearly three acres of jail land. These handmade spiritual necklaces gained considerable attention during the recent 2026 Magh Mela, sparking a significant demand that has extended to temple towns across Uttar Pradesh, including Ayodhya, Varanasi, Mathura, and Prayagraj.
A dedicated group of 10-12 inmates is now working extended hours to fulfill the increasing orders. Jail authorities observed the inmates' artistic efforts within their barracks and subsequently established stalls for sales, enabling them to earn from their craft. The production process has been streamlined with the use of machines to speed up the creation of beads, allowing inmates to focus on the craft and train others.
Beyond the commercial success, the jail administration notes a profound positive change in the inmates' demeanor and personality. Spending several hours daily on this craft has reportedly motivated them, fostering a sense of purpose and contributing to their development as individuals, which is expected to positively influence their reintegration into society upon release.
