A meticulously restored 4K print of Muzaffar Ali's 1981 period musical drama, 'Umrao Jaan,' is scheduled for its European debut at the Tongues on Fire UK Asian Film Festival. This acclaimed film, featuring Rekha as a Lucknow courtesan and poet, has been preserved by the National Film Archive of India. The screening will take place at the BFI IMAX.
The festival, now in its 28th year, centers on the theme "Stories That Bind Us," showcasing a diverse range of South Asian storytelling. Attendees can anticipate the UK premiere of the Bengali film 'Baksho Bondi' and a musical tribute to legendary artists O P Nayyar, Dharmendra, and Asha Bhosle.
Further enriching the lineup, screenings will occur at the Kiln Theatre, highlighting British Asian experiences through films like Jazz Bhalla's 'Never Had A Chance.'
