The quiz show "The 1% Club" has become the top-selling new UK format of the last decade, recently expanding its reach to Sweden and Italy. These new international versions bring the total number of global adaptations to 15, positioning the show as a key asset for BBC Studios at their upcoming showcase. Sumi Connock, BBC Studios' EVP Global Creative Network and Formats, highlighted the show's ability to revive primetime game shows, noting successful runs in the UK and Australia.
The show's success is attributed to its repeatable format, engaging play-along element, and adaptable set, which can be scaled for various studio sizes. Co-creator Andy Auerbach emphasized the format's appeal through brain-teaser questions, drawing parallels to popular daily games like Wordle, and noted how younger generations often excel at them. This broad appeal across age groups is a significant factor in its international sales.
While recent breakout UK formats have often originated internationally, "The 1% Club" exemplifies a successful homegrown intellectual property. Despite a single cancellation in Mexico, its return rate in other territories, including reaching Season 5 in the UK, indicates strong audience engagement. The U.S. adaptation has had an intriguing journey, with discussions for a third season pending.
BBC Studios is actively exploring spin-offs and brand extensions, including themed specials and digital and gaming experiences. This strategic expansion, coupled with the development of original British IP like "Wisdom of the Crowd," signals a continued appetite for innovative entertainment formats.
