Tiger Dancers and Pot-Smashing: Udupi Celebrates Janmashtami

Udupi is transforming into a vibrant spectacle as it prepares for the Sri Krishna Janmashtami and Vittalapindi celebrations. The festivities, steeped in centuries of tradition, have been ongoing for the past month with various religious and cultural programs. Key events include the energetic Hulivesha (tiger dance) competitions and the thrilling Mosaru Kudike, where performers smash pots filled with curd suspended from decorated structures. A highlight is the Vittalapindi, where a golden chariot carrying a clay idol of Sri Krishna will be pulled through Car Street by thousands of devotees.

The celebrations will feature traditional Malla Yuddha (wrestling) performances and lively drum beats accompanying the Hulivesha troupes. Inside the mutt, arrangements are being made to distribute thousands of prasadam items, including undes and chakkulis. The Paryaya seer will conduct the final ritual immersion of the clay idol in Madhwa Sarovara after the procession. Tight security measures are in place to ensure a smooth and safe celebration for all attendees.
