UCLA Coach's Wisdom: Beyond the Game

A documentary titled 'You See L.A.' provides an in-depth look into the lives of the UCLA women's basketball team. Head coach Cori Close, a mentee of legendary coach John Wooden, champions a program focused on mentoring athletes for life, not just for their 40 years on the court. This philosophy extends to the documentary, which aims to showcase courage, vulnerability, and the mastery of one's craft.

The film's executive producers, Kelsey Trainor and Jeff Luini, envisioned 'You See L.A.' as a powerful narrative for women's sports, comparable to any major sports story. They emphasized that the documentary is a human story, delving into the players' lives and support systems. The producers assured the team that their aim was not to capture 'gotcha moments,' fostering a trusting environment for authentic storytelling.

Trainor highlighted that the transparency of the documentary meant capturing both the team's triumphs and struggles, noting that a compelling story could be told regardless of the outcome, emphasizing the importance of the human aspect. Close also pointed out the diversity within women's basketball, stating her program welcomes 'all of you,' irrespective of background, and has received feedback that viewers connected with the joy and hope the team's story provided, rather than just wins and losses.

Close expressed confidence in the team's future, stating their focus is on 'reloading' rather than rebuilding. The documentary seeks to highlight young athletes navigating the pressures of competition on a large platform, encouraging understanding and support for their journey.
