Two Widows, One Man: Life in Nepal's Ghost Village
25 May
Summary
- Two widows of the same man remain in an abandoned mountain village.
- Their contrasting personalities shape their unusual bond.
- Cinematography captures the stark beauty of the desolate landscape.

In Nepal's Dhorpatan valley, the harsh winter sees most inhabitants migrate south, leaving behind only two caretakers: Ratima and Kalima. These two widows, who shared the same husband, now watch over the abandoned mountain village, their relationship a complex mix of warmth and discord. Ratima, the elder, lives with regret and alcohol, while the younger Kalima maintains a brighter outlook, caring for Ratima with sisterly tenderness. The documentary's stunning cinematography showcases the desolate beauty of Dhorpatan, from frozen stillness to spring's awakening. However, the focus on the landscape occasionally overshadows the women's interactions, making their relationship feel less explored than its potential. While visually rich, the film sometimes drifts into nature documentary territory, momentarily losing its emotional core.
