TV Vet Turns Panto Dame in Cheshire

Steve Leonard, a familiar face from BBC's "Vet School" and "Vets in Practice," is currently balancing the demanding launch of a new veterinary practice in Nantwich with an entirely different, yet exhilarating, role on stage. The 53-year-old vet is taking on the lead role of a panto dame in a local amateur production of "Jack and the Beanstalk," a decision he describes as a "godsend" amid the challenges of establishing his new business.

Leonard's panto debut sees him portraying Nanny Tess Tickle alongside his daughter in the Audlem Theatre Company's production. While new to wearing heels as part of the costume, he previously performed in a student panto. He humorously notes that his stage presence in heels might resemble a "Bambi" on ice. Despite the theatrical demands, Leonard sees similarities between his veterinary work and performing, emphasizing the crucial role of effective communication in both professions.

The pantomime, "Jack and the Beanstalk," is scheduled to run at Audlem Public Hall from Wednesday until January 31st. Leonard finds the stage performance liberating, stating, "I'm playing the dame. I can do what I like." The experience of opening a new practice has been both "terrifying and really exciting," making the pantomime a valuable outlet.
