According to a new book, Janet Jackson and Tupac Shakur had a heated exchange during the filming of their 1993 movie Poetic Justice. The book claims that Jackson requested Tupac to take an AIDS test before they filmed a kissing scene, as she was concerned about his "reputation as a cat about town."
The book's author, Jeff Pearlman, states that Jackson told the film's producer, Steve Nicolaides, about her request. Nicolaides then allegedly relayed the message to Tupac, who responded with expletives, refusing to comply. Nicolaides later commented that he "honestly think[s] he found it amusing" and that he couldn't blame Jackson for asking, given the AIDS crisis at the time.
The alleged incident occurred during the production of Poetic Justice, which was director John Singleton's second film following his Oscar-nominated debut Boyz n the Hood. The film saw Jackson and Tupac playing a poet-slash-hairstylist and a postal worker, respectively, who form an unexpected bond as they travel from Los Angeles to Oakland.
Despite the reported tensions on set, Poetic Justice was a critical success, with Jackson receiving an Oscar nomination for her original song "Again," which she co-wrote.
