The historic clock tower in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent, has resumed its hourly chimes following recent repair work. This Grade II listed structure, standing 16m tall, had been silenced since November 2024 while its intricate mechanism underwent restoration.
The city council announced the completion of the repairs on Thursday, marking the tower's return to full operation. Councillor Finlay Gordon-McCusker highlighted the clock tower as a vital element of Tunstall's identity and a symbol of the town's historical civic pride.
Erected in 1893, the clock tower also features a life-size bust of Sir Smith Child, a former MP for Staffordshire North. The council stated that this restoration aligns with its comprehensive improvement strategy for Tunstall, which includes significant government funding.
This initiative is part of a larger regeneration project for Tunstall, aimed at enhancing public spaces. The city council's commitment to preserving such landmarks underscores the value placed on the town's heritage.
