Cult Folk Icon Tucker Zimmerman Dies in Belgian Fire

Cult American folk artist Tucker Zimmerman died on Saturday, January 17, in a house fire at his home in Belgium. He was 84 years old and passed away with his wife of 50 years, Marie-Claire Lambert, succumbing to asphyxiation. Zimmerman, born in San Francisco in 1941, initially studied music theory and composition before turning to folk music in 1965.

After receiving a Fulbright scholarship to study in Rome, Zimmerman established a European foothold, meeting his wife, Marie-Claire, in 1967. He released his debut album, 'Ten Songs by Tucker Zimmerman,' in 1968, produced by Tony Visconti and later lauded by David Bowie. Ejected to Belgium in 1970, Zimmerman built a dedicated following and released several acclaimed albums, including 'Over Here in Europe' and 'Word Games'.

He also took a hiatus from performing between 1984 and 1996 to focus on writing fiction and poetry, and composing for ensembles. His final release was the 2024 collaborative album 'Dance of Love' with Big Thief. The label 4AD confirmed his death in a recent press release.
