TriStar Pictures has secured the film rights to "The Last Orbit," a forthcoming novel by New York Times bestselling author Ben Mezrich. The deal was made preemptively, signaling strong industry confidence in the project. Matt Shakman, known for his work on "WandaVision" and "The Fantastic Four: First Steps," is slated to direct.
"The Last Orbit," scheduled for publication in Q1 2027 by Authors Equity, is a science fiction thriller. It explores the potential global reaction to asteroid YR4, which has a statistically significant chance of colliding with Earth or the Moon in 2032. The narrative focuses on a realistic international cooperation effort required to avert planetary disaster.
Beau Flynn of FlynnPictureCo. will produce the film. Josh Friedman, who previously collaborated with Shakman on "The Fantastic Four: First Steps," is credited with the story. Ben Mezrich, whose works have frequently been adapted, including "The Social Network," will executive produce alongside Scott Sheldon.
