Bronze Age Boat Surfaces in UK Excavation

The University of Nottingham Museum is hosting 'Prehistoric Lives in the Trent Valley', an exhibition drawing on decades of archaeological research along the River Trent. This exhibition showcases artefacts, pollen samples, and sediment layers that illustrate how prehistoric peoples lived and adapted to the dynamic river valley. A notable exhibit is a Bronze Age log boat, approximately 8 meters long, discovered in a quarry near Shardlow, Derbyshire.

Much of the valley's prehistoric evidence, including the Shardlow log boat, has been revealed through commercial gravel quarrying. This process has exposed ancient river deposits, preserving organic materials and structures. Researchers have monitored extraction sites, leading to the discovery of multiple log boats and timber structures, protected by layers of silt and sand.

The exhibition also features Iron Age settlement remains, such as a roundhouse found in Hoveringham, Nottinghamshire. By examining physical finds alongside environmental data like pollen and sediment records, researchers reconstruct past landscapes and human activities, offering a comprehensive view of life in the Trent Valley thousands of years ago.

'Prehistoric Lives in the Trent Valley' runs from July 24, 2026, to January 10, 2027, with free admission. The exhibition aims to provide visitors with deeper insights into the region's paleoenvironmental and archaeological history, with related talks and events scheduled. The ongoing discoveries underscore the Trent Valley's significance as a live site for archaeological research.
