- Transformers 8 will be set in modern day.
Steven Spielberg is returning to the Transformers franchise as executive producer for the upcoming eighth live-action film, Transformers 8. He will oversee all creative aspects of the project, aiming to recapture the essence of the original films. This marks a significant return for the legendary director, who previously served in a similar capacity for the first two movies.
Former franchise star Shia LaBeouf, last seen in 2011, will not be part of the new installment. Director Michael Bay is reportedly in early discussions to helm the film, his sixth in the series. The script, penned by Jason Fuchs, is set in the present day, diverging from the '80s and '90s settings of recent films like Bumblebee and Rise of the Beasts.
The franchise update occurs after the merger forming Skydance. Spielberg agreed to return after reviewing Fuchs' script. Plans for a Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover have been canceled; instead, a new G.I. Joe film is being developed with Danny McBride.
