Trans Love Story Premieres, Redefining Indian Cinema

Filmmaker Kaizad Gustad has unveiled "Lala & Poppy," a groundbreaking film exploring a transgender love story, marking his return to directing. The movie made its debut at the International Film Festival of India, featuring trans actors Suruj Rajkhowa and Veer Singh as leads. The narrative centers on Lala and Poppy, two individuals undergoing their respective transitions while falling in love, a theme previously untold.

Gustad was inspired to create the film after meeting Suruj Rajkhowa, leading to years of research and community consultation to ensure authentic representation. Producer Bobby Bedi highlighted the film's aim to bridge the gap between legal acceptance and social reality for transgender individuals in India. The film is intentionally crafted to engage a broader audience, including those outside the LGBTQ+ community.

Both Rajkhowa and Singh expressed the personal significance of their roles, emphasizing the rare opportunity to portray trans characters as complex human beings rather than objects of ridicule. The production team notably included a queer-inclusive crew. "Lala & Poppy" is slated for a theatrical release in India, with plans for international festival submissions to raise awareness about transgender issues.
