The National Tramway Museum in Crich, Derbyshire, has been awarded £492,880 by Arts Council England. This significant grant from the museum estates and development fund is earmarked for the refurbishment of the Great Exhibition Hall.
The planned works include critical repairs to the hall's roof and windows to prevent leaks and enhance structural security. Additionally, visitor experience will be improved through better lighting systems and an extended track.
This investment is crucial for preserving a nationally significant collection of historic trams, some dating back to 1873. The museum, which has operated for over six decades, houses more than 80 vintage trams, with 20 still operational.
Works are scheduled to minimize disruption, primarily occurring during the winter closure period. The museum aims to complete the entire project by the end of March 2027, safeguarding this historic venue for future generations.
