Lawrence Survived 4 Shots, Now Urges Therapy

Country star Tracy Lawrence is sharing reflections on the traumatic events of May 1991, when he was shot four times during a mugging while recording his debut album. More than three decades later, Lawrence, who is launching his 2026 No Alibis Tour this March, now understands the critical importance of seeking mental health support after surviving such a profound trauma.

Lawrence admitted to experiencing anger and a sense of his opportunities being threatened following the shooting. He confessed to suppressing the trauma, which negatively impacted his personal relationships and career. He now advocates strongly for mental health care, recognizing it as essential after traumatic experiences. The singer also noted developing a "God complex" post-incident, leading him to push boundaries more frequently.

He spent days in Vanderbilt Medical Center undergoing surgeries for a bullet lodged in his knee, with doctors deciding against removing one from his hip. Lawrence faced the possibility of leg amputation, a deeply traumatic aspect of his recovery that continues to cause lingering physical issues, including a knee replacement and upcoming ankle surgery.
