Dame Tracey Emin, a prominent figure among the Young British Artists, has reflected on her iconic 1999 artwork, 'My Bed.' She now describes the piece, which famously depicted a dishevelled bedroom, as something that would be "ridiculously tidy" and "boring" if she were to recreate it today. The artwork, originally a stark representation of a difficult period in her life, was sold for over £2.5m in 2014 and is currently on loan at Tate Modern.
Emin has emphasized that 'My Bed' was not merely an artistic statement but a pivotal element in her survival. She shared that seeing the work again brought her to tears, explaining, "That bed kept me alive." Having recently been honored with a damehood and receiving a four-year cancer all-clear, Emin feels a renewed sense of purpose.
She now expresses a "duty" to speak fearlessly about her regrets, including smoking and problematic past relationships. Emin hopes her art, which tackles difficult themes like abuse, abortion, and suicide, does so without judgment. She also commented on societal issues, including the impact of AI and the need for greater appreciation of the arts.
