Toy Story 5: Jessie Leads New Tech-Focused Adventure

Toy Story 5 ushers in a new era for the beloved franchise, with Jessie stepping into a central role. Director Andrew Stanton and co-screenwriter Kenna Harris have introduced new characters, including Lilypad, a frog-themed tablet, and Blaze, a confident young girl, to explore how technology is changing the way children interact with their toys. Stanton notes the inherent challenge of adding to an already vast cast while ensuring the story remains focused.

The narrative delves into the evolving relationship between children and technology, reflecting on the shorter lifespan of tech toys and the potential impact on childhood play. Stanton's research involved discussions with parents at Pixar, highlighting the messy, nuanced reality of introducing technology to young children rather than presenting a simple good-versus-bad scenario.

The film's visual style is described as handcrafted and improvisational, aiming to capture the ephemeral nature of make-believe. Stanton also discusses the development of Bonnie's friendship with Blaze, emphasizing the importance of finding connection with those who think differently. Buzz Lightyear's devotion to Jessie is also highlighted as a notable dynamic in this installment.

A significant development for the film was the inclusion of a new song, "I Knew It, I Knew You," by Taylor Swift. Swift expressed enthusiasm for the Toy Story movies and agreed to contribute, making it a remarkable moment for the production team.
