In a recent announcement, Slough, Woodley, and Newbury were notably absent from the fifteen towns shortlisted for the prestigious UK Town of Culture award 2028. This outcome has led to widespread disappointment among those who spearheaded the bids.
Vineet Vijh, who led Slough's bid in the large towns category, described the result as "very disappointing." However, he emphasized a renewed determination to enhance Slough as a residential area. Vijh highlighted the town's historical significance as a place of innovation and its diverse, cohesive communities as key strengths. Slough now aspires to become a major creative hub, integrating art and culture to drive economic development over the coming ten years.
Brian Fennelly, representing Woodley's bid in the medium towns category, also shared his disappointment at not being able to showcase Woodley's uniqueness. He pointed to the strong community spirit and cultural offerings as the town's main selling points. Both Vijh and Fennelly indicated an interest in participating in future award competitions if they become available.
