In a recent interview, singer Tinashe, 32, opened up about the financial challenges of being a touring musician. Contrary to the common perception that touring is a lucrative endeavor, Tinashe shared that many of her tours have actually resulted in a net loss.
"A lot of people think that you go on tour and you make all this money, win-win," Tinashe said. "But in my experience, a lot of the tours I've gone on, I've ended up losing money because I have the vision of the creative and the things that I want to achieve."
Tinashe explained that the costs of venues, tickets, and other tour-related expenses often outweigh the revenue generated, making it difficult to turn a profit. "A lot of times, the rooms, the tickets, whatever... you don't end up getting to that place where you end up net positive. There's some level of sacrifice if you want to kind of create the vision to the degree that you want to create it."
While Tinashe acknowledged that she has been "blessed" to play larger venues and earn more money in recent years, she emphasized the challenges faced by newer artists trying to tour and reach their fans. "I understand, especially new artists, it's super tough to be able to tour and to go to these places and these fans and all these different cities that want you to come, and you're like, 'You don't understand. It's really, like, I can't get there.'"
Amaarae, 31, also shared her perspective, saying she loves to perform but "hates to tour." The "Angels in Tibet" artist described herself as a "real homebody" who doesn't enjoy the constant travel and time away from home that comes with touring.
Despite the financial and personal challenges, both Tinashe and Amaarae remain dedicated to their craft. Tinashe recently wrapped up her "Match My Freak: World Tour," while Amaarae is gearing up for her upcoming "The Black Star Experience" tour in support of her latest album.
