Summary
- Toronto Film Critics apologized to filmmaker Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers.
- Her speech supporting Palestine was allegedly censored and cut short.
- The controversy led to resignations within the TFCA leadership.

The Toronto Film Critics Association (TFCA) has publicly apologized to indigenous filmmaker Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers following controversy over the alleged censorship of her acceptance speech. Tailfeathers had returned her award after discovering her remarks, which expressed support for Palestine, were edited down without her knowledge during the March 2 gala in Toronto.
The TFCA admitted that her message was not aired in full and that she was not given an opportunity to review the edits. This incident has led to significant fallout within the organization, including the resignation of its president, Johanna Schneller, and the departure of 16 members. An additional three members have since resigned, bringing the total to 19 out of 46.
In response, the TFCA has committed to a new policy ensuring all future award winners can review and approve their pre-recorded speeches before broadcast. They also aim to communicate any time constraints clearly throughout the process. The association also extended an apology to its members, vowing to welcome new perspectives to better represent the Toronto film scene.
