Toronto African Fest Canceled Over Safety Fears
30 Jul
Summary
- Annual African music festival canceled due to safety concerns.
- Limited capacity at Woodbine Park led to permit issues.
- Organizers plan a return in 2027 with a larger venue.

The 38th annual African music festival in Toronto has been canceled for the upcoming summer due to significant safety concerns related to venue capacity. Organizers from Music Africa of Canada stated that challenges in securing a permit and receiving final direction from the city by June left insufficient time to adapt.
Woodbine Park, typically accommodating 17,000 people, was assigned an operational limit of 5,000 for this year's event. This capacity reduction, despite planned safety upgrades and ticketing, posed a risk of thousands of attendees gathering outside the venue, a situation organizers deemed unmanageable.
Music Africa of Canada is now working with the city to identify a larger suitable venue, with plans to reinstate the festival in 2027. This marks the first cancellation for one of Canada's longest-running African cultural festivals, which is also North America's largest free African music festival.
