Tom Hanks is set to explore the deadliest conflict in history in the upcoming 20-episode docuseries, "World War II with Tom Hanks." The actor, who previously starred in "Saving Private Ryan," will serve as an executive producer and narrator for the series.
The docuseries aims to present a deeply human portrait of the war. An exclusive preview highlights the swiftness of Germany's invasion of Poland in 1939, which removed a major European nation from the map in less than a month.
Archival footage shows the extensive destruction of railroads, bridges, and airfields in the initial 24 hours of the invasion, paving the way for the German army's advance. Historians emphasize the nightmarish experience of Polish civilians, who faced modern warfare in an unbelievably horrifying manner.
Despite Poland possessing a modern army, including tanks and artillery, they were outgunned by Hitler's forces, which had almost all of Germany's resources dedicated to military buildup. The first three episodes of "World War II with Tom Hanks" are scheduled to premiere on May 25.
