For "Toy Story 4," Pixar utilized extensive archival recordings of Don Rickles, with his family's approval, to bring the character back. However, Stanton did not have this option for "Toy Story 5," which began development a few years later. He sought sound-alikes, finding Jeff Bergman for Mr. Potato Head and Anna Vocino for Mrs. Potato Head.
In a separate interview, Tom Hanks recalled an amusing encounter where his sons met Don Rickles. Hanks described Rickles' distinctive humor when one of his sons, then nearing 16, was introduced to him, humorously advising him to "get yourself some broads and live it up."
The narrative of "Toy Story 5" is inspired by a child's transition away from playing with toys as they grow older. An 8-year-old Bonnie struggles with making friends, as her peers are more engaged with screens, leading her parents to gift her a smart device.
