Prosthetic artist Kazu Hiro has detailed the intricate makeup process for Tom Cruise's role as Digger Rockwell in Alejandro González Iñárritu's film. Hiro explained that the transformation involved seven distinct prosthetic pieces.
These pieces included a bald cap, forehead, cheek, nose, lower lip, neck, chin, and wig components. Cruise specifically requested a heavy silicone belly, which Hiro fitted into spandex suits, acknowledging the actor's dedication to performance despite the added heat and weight.
The character's age was adjusted during the design process, requiring Hiro to create multiple versions of the look. Initially, Digger was conceived as 76 years old, but this was later changed to 67, necessitating significant rework on the prosthetic designs within a tight timeframe.
