Titanic's Tearful Reign: Voted World's Saddest Movie
15 Mar
Summary
- Titanic declared the weepiest movie by film fans.
- The Notebook and Ghost follow Titanic in the ranking.
- Women are twice as likely to cry during movies than men.

A recent survey of film enthusiasts has crowned James Cameron's 'Titanic' as the most tear-jerking movie ever made. The 1997 blockbuster, starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, resonated deeply with 41% of respondents, making it the top choice for a good cry. Following closely behind 'Titanic' were 'The Notebook,' securing second place, and 'Ghost,' rounding out the top three most emotional films.
The research, which polled 2,000 movie fans, also revealed a significant gender difference in emotional responses to films. Women were found to be twice as likely to cry during a movie as men. Specifically, 47% of women reported tearing up during 'Titanic,' compared to 34% of men.
Beyond these top contenders, classic films like 'Gone with the Wind' and 'Casablanca' also featured on the list of tearjerkers, though they garnered lower percentages of votes. The study also noted that sad movies can offer health benefits, such as releasing endorphins and oxytocin, which can improve mood and promote human connection. A separate analysis of social media comments identified 'Grave of the Fireflies' as the saddest movie based on online reactions.
